Spring is finally arriving, and for many householders that means thoughts turn to spring cleaning – dusting behind that big heavy bookcase, or tidying the cables behind the TV, along with all the other chores that simply aren’t worth doing more regularly.
But if all you do is dust and polish, you could be missing the perfect opportunity to brighten up your living room this spring; with several bank holiday weekends on the calendar, longer lighter evenings, and Christmas still far beyond the horizon, it’s the ideal time of year for some quick DIY design fixes.
1. Splashes of Colour.
How do you add colour to a room without having to redecorate? The solution lies in accessories, and these don’t have to cost the Earth.
But while you don’t need to have money to burn, you might want to buy accessories to burn – scented candles are usually brightly coloured to begin with, and throw off light of their own, making them a doubly good way to brighten your room.
2. Soft Furnishings.
Don’t just add colour – add comfort too, with scatter cushions and throws for your sofa, and you can make your living room more versatile in the process.
Plenty of cushions means you will never be short of somewhere to sit, even if someone has to perch on the floor for a while at busy times; at least they will be comfortable.
3. Light Fantastic.
If candles aren’t your thing, then think about adding a standard lamp, or putting a table lamp on your coffee table; uplighters bring a new dimension to your room, but any lamp can add brightness.
Even if there’s nowhere for a lamp, you might be able to get bulbs for your ceiling light that provide a warmer glow, or even patterned bulbs that mimic the reflective effects of a chandelier.
4. Down to Earth.
Many living rooms suffer from having an overly practical carpet or dull wood or laminate floor, all of which can appear drab.
Once again you can add both colour and comfort, this time in the form of rugs that give you somewhere fluffy to rest your feet, and add some removable brightness in case your tastes change in the future.
5. A Lick of Paint.
Yes, you can paint the whole room if you wish, but for a faster and easier fix, just focus on the woodwork – skirting, coving, door frames and window sills.
A fresh coat of bright white gloss can transform these elements, which in turn frame the room as a whole, and can quickly put the vibrancy back into your interior design scheme.
