Your sofa, armchairs and other furniture are the stars of the show in your living room – and the same is true elsewhere in your home, where your bed or dining table takes the spotlight.
So it’s only right that, to show them off at their best and complement the level of comfort you feel from your all-star items of furniture, you give them a suitable stage to stand on.
The floor you put in any room of your home can have a huge impact on how it feels to be in there, yet we often leave this decision almost until last.
Resist the urge to buy whatever laminate flooring is on offer this week; and instead, sit down on your sofa and have a serious think about what type of floor would make you happiest.
Treading the Boards
First of all, if your room has had the same carpet or laminate since you moved in, have a peek underneath to see what’s down there.
If you discover original solid wood floorboards – or you’re lucky enough to have them exposed already – it might be worth making the most of this feature.
Specialist contractors can sand away the surface to remove layers of unwanted lacquer or scratches and other damage, leaving you with the option of applying a new finish that suits your interior design scheme.
Loving Laminates
For a floorboard effect when you don’t have original wood to restore, laminates are still the go-to option, and snap-together vinyl flooring can give a range of different finishes too.
In a living room, it might be best to avoid the really high-gloss finishes, but you can always add rugs if you want to make the room feel warmer and softer.
The important thing is to remember that a laminate-floored, painted-walled room is likely to echo, so soften those hard surfaces with accessories – from rugs and footstools to clocks, mirrors and paintings on the walls – and you’ll help to break up the angles to cancel out echoes.
Crazy for Carpets
A truly luxurious lounge comes from having a wall-to-wall carpet, and while these are not the status symbol they once were, they’re still top of many people’s interior design lists.
Maximise the plush factor with the thickest underlay you can afford, with the thickest, softest carpet on top – unless of course you specifically need something more durable due to young children or pets in the house.
Either way, your room should feel softer and more peaceful with one of its largest surfaces covered in this way, making it the perfect environment in which to relax.
