Creating the Perfect Bathroom for You

Your bathroom is one of your home’s most functional rooms, so it’s important to get it right – but unfortunately, many people are daunted by worries about water and steam, and can end up designing a space that’s totally waterproof, but can also look quite clinical.

If you’d prefer something more welcoming and comfortable, there are some easy steps you can take to strike the right compromise, so that stepping into your bathroom does not feel like walking into hospital.

1. Colour

Nobody is suggesting you should buy a coloured bathroom suite – white has the best resale value, so play it safe on the fixtures themselves.

But you can add colour and vibrancy to the room with accessories, artwork, even lighting and candles if you wish.

The best thing is that these kinds of items are typically easy to remove, so while you’ve created your perfect interior design scheme, it’s one that’s easy to alter if your tastes change.

2. Function

Make your bathroom somewhere you spend more of your time, and you’ll get better value from it.

For example, a bathroom with somewhere to sit – as we’ll discuss further below – means you can use it as a sanctuary without really having to do anything while you’re in there.

This could be as simple as staying a little longer after a bath or shower, before you unlock the door and return to the relative chaos of your family life.

3. Added Extras

Raise the comfort level further with some soft furnishings – and don’t be afraid to do this, even in a room where there’s going to be steam from time to time.

A truly perfect bathroom should be ventilated well enough to get rid of excess humidity anyway, either through an open window, a wall vent or an extractor fan.

Deal with the dampness and moisture first, and any furniture you add – from cottage-style storage chests to an armchair to relax in after a bath or shower – should be at no greater long-term risk than it would be in any other room.

4. Remember your Guests

It’s not just the master bathroom that’s important, so if you have several en suites or shower rooms throughout your house, give some attention to the others too.

Put suitable accessories in – toothbrush holder, soap dish and so on – so that any stay-over guests are not left wondering where to put their paraphernalia.

A really great bathroom will serve your needs anytime you use it, but will also accommodate one-off guests anytime they come to stay; get it right on both counts, and you’ll have created the perfect room.
